BookStack on GKE Autopilot
BookStack is a free, open-source, MIT-licensed wiki and documentation platform built on Laravel (PHP), organising content as Shelves → Books → Chapters → Pages with WYSIWYG and Markdown editing, full-text search, page revisions, and granular permissions. This module deploys BookStack on GKE Autopilot on top of the App_GKE foundation, which provisions and manages the shared Google Cloud and Kubernetes infrastructure.
This guide focuses on the cloud services BookStack uses and how to explore and operate them from the Google Cloud Console and the command line. For the mechanics that are common to every GKE application — Workload Identity, ingress, autoscaling, CI/CD, Cloud Armor, IAP, Binary Authorization, VPC Service Controls, backups, and the deployment lifecycle — refer to the App_GKE foundation guide rather than repeating them here.
1. Overview
BookStack runs as a PHP web workload on GKE Autopilot. The deployment wires together a focused set of Google Cloud services:

Sensible defaults worth knowing up front:
- MySQL 8.0 is mandatory. The database engine is fixed by the shared application
layer (
database_type = "MYSQL_8_0"); PostgreSQL is not supported and selecting another engine breaks startup. - The prebuilt
linuxserver/bookstackimage is used directly. There is no custom Cloud Build; the official LinuxServer.io image is mirrored into Artifact Registry (enable_image_mirroring = true) and deployed as-is. - The container listens on port 80 (
container_port = 80,container_protocol = "http1"). - NFS persistence of uploads is on by default.
enable_nfs = truemounts NFS at/var/lib/bookstackso uploaded images and attachments survive restarts, redeploys, and pod rescheduling. Because BookStack is NFS-backed, the Deployment uses theRecreateupdate strategy (a single pod against the shared volume). - A single replica is maintained (
min_instance_count = 1,max_instance_count = 1; GKE has no scale-to-zero). Do not scale beyond one pod without external session/cache coordination — multiple pods against the same NFS volume and DB deadlock. APP_KEYis immutable after first boot. The Laravel app key is generated once and stored in Secret Manager; rotating it makes all encrypted DB values undecryptable.- The image runs
php artisan migrate --forceautomatically on start, so the schema is created on first boot afterdb-initprovisions the database and user — there is no separate migration job. - A default administrator is seeded by the LinuxServer image:
admin@admin.comwith passwordpassword. Change it immediately on first login. - GKE connects to Cloud SQL through the Auth Proxy sidecar on
127.0.0.1:3306(enable_cloudsql_volume = true), and the GKE wiring overridesDB_HOST = "127.0.0.1". - A custom domain, managed certificate, and reserved static IP are enabled by
default (
enable_custom_domain = true,reserve_static_ip = true), withsession_affinity = "ClientIP"for sticky UI sessions.
2. Google Cloud Services & How to Explore Them
All commands assume you have run
gcloud container clusters get-credentials <cluster> --region <region> --project <project>
and that PROJECT, REGION, and NAMESPACE are set. The namespace and other
identifiers are reported in the deployment Outputs.
A. GKE Autopilot — the BookStack workload
BookStack pods are scheduled on Autopilot, which bills for the CPU/memory the pods
actually request. Because the app is NFS-backed, the workload runs as a single-replica
Deployment using the Recreate strategy.
- Console: Kubernetes Engine → Workloads → select the BookStack workload to see pods, revisions, and events. Kubernetes Engine → Services & Ingress shows the external IP.

B. Cloud SQL for MySQL 8.0
BookStack stores all application data (books, pages, users, revisions, permissions)
in a managed Cloud SQL for MySQL 8.0 instance. Pods reach it privately through the
Cloud SQL Auth Proxy sidecar on 127.0.0.1:3306 (enable_cloudsql_volume = true);
no public IP is exposed. On first deploy an initialization Job creates the application
database and user.
- Console: SQL → select the instance for connections, backups, flags, and metrics.

C. Cloud Storage
A dedicated Cloud Storage bucket (storage_buckets default: name_suffix = "data",
resulting in gcs-bookstack<tenant>-data) is provisioned automatically. The workload
service account is granted access. Additional buckets can be declared via
storage_buckets.

D. Redis (optional cache & sessions)
Redis is disabled by default (enable_redis = false); BookStack uses its local
cache and session drivers. When enable_redis = true is set, the shared layer injects
REDIS_HOST and REDIS_PORT. When redis_host is left empty and enable_nfs is
true, the NFS server VM's co-hosted Redis IP is used.

E. Secret Manager
One cryptographic secret is generated automatically and stored in Secret Manager: the
Laravel APP_KEY (base64:<44-char base64>), used to encrypt all application
data that BookStack stores encrypted. The database password is managed separately by
the foundation.

F. Networking & ingress
By default the workload is exposed through an external Cloud Load Balancing IP with a
custom domain and Google-managed certificate (enable_custom_domain = true), and a
static IP is reserved (reserve_static_ip = true) so the address survives redeploys.

G. Cloud Logging & Monitoring
Pod stdout/stderr flow to Cloud Logging; GKE and Cloud SQL metrics flow to Cloud Monitoring. Optional uptime checks and alert policies are available.

3. BookStack Application Behaviour
- First-deploy database setup. An initialization Job runs
db-init.shusingmysql:8.0-debian. It detects the Cloud SQL socket or TCP endpoint, waits for MySQL to be reachable, creates the application database and user, grants privileges, verifies the app user can connect, and gracefully shuts down the Cloud SQL Auth Proxy sidecar. The job is idempotent and safe to re-run (max_retries = 3). - Schema auto-migration on start. The LinuxServer BookStack image runs
php artisan migrate --forceautomatically on every container start, so the schema is created on first boot and upgraded on later boots — there is no separate migration job. APP_KEYis immutable after first boot. The Laravel app key is generated once and written to Secret Manager. Rotating it makes all encrypted DB values (two-factor secrets, some settings) permanently undecryptable. Only rotate during a planned maintenance window with a re-encryption plan.- First-run administrator. The image seeds a default admin account,
admin@admin.com/password. Change the password (and ideally the email) immediately after the first login. - Uploaded files live on NFS. Images, attachments, and other uploads are stored on
the filesystem under
/var/lib/bookstack, which is NFS-backed by default. The Deployment therefore uses theRecreatestrategy so only one pod ever writes to the shared volume — do not scale to multiple replicas without external coordination. - Health path. The liveness probe targets
/statusby default — BookStack's unauthenticated JSON health endpoint that reports app/database/cache/session status. The startup probe is a TCP check. Allow a generous first-boot window (300-second initial delay) for the automatic migrations. - Inspect job execution:

4. Configuration Variables
Variables are grouped exactly as they appear on the deployment platform. Only settings specific to or notable for BookStack are listed; every other input is inherited from App_GKE with its standard behaviour and defaults.

6. Configuration Pitfalls & Sensible Defaults
Risk: Critical (data loss / outage / security) — High (service degraded) — Medium (cost or partial degradation) — Low (minor).
Inherited plan-time validation. This module passes its configuration through the App_GKE foundation engine, which validates values and combinations at plan time — a read replica without its primary, IAP with no authorized identities, a
gen1runtime with NFS/GCS mounts, adatabase_typethat does not match the engine BookStack requires, an out-of-rangeredis_port/backup_retention_days. Invalid configuration fails the plan with a clear, named error before any resource is created, so most mistakes below are caught up front rather than at apply or runtime.
