Langfuse on GKE Autopilot
Langfuse is an open-source, MIT-licensed LLM engineering and observability platform — tracing, prompt management, evaluations, and metrics for applications built on large language models. This module deploys Langfuse on GKE Autopilot on top of the App_GKE foundation, which provisions and manages the shared Google Cloud and Kubernetes infrastructure.
This guide focuses on the cloud services Langfuse uses and how to explore and operate them from the Google Cloud Console and the command line. For the mechanics that are common to every GKE application — Workload Identity, ingress, autoscaling, CI/CD, Cloud Armor, IAP, Binary Authorization, VPC Service Controls, backups, and the deployment lifecycle — refer to the App_GKE foundation guide rather than repeating them here.
1. Overview
Langfuse runs as a Next.js web workload. This module deploys the v2 line (Postgres-only); Langfuse v3 additionally requires ClickHouse, Redis, and S3 and is out of scope. The deployment wires together a focused set of Google Cloud services:

Sensible defaults worth knowing up front:
- Langfuse v2 (Postgres-only) is pinned. The image is built
FROM langfuse/langfuse:2via theLANGFUSE_VERSIONbuild ARG;application_version = "latest"resolves to2. - PostgreSQL 15 is mandatory. The database engine is fixed by the shared application layer; selecting any other engine breaks startup.
NEXTAUTH_SECRETandSALTare generated automatically and stored in Secret Manager, materialised into the namespace, and injected as env vars. Langfuse's zod env validation refuses to boot without both —NEXTAUTH_SECRETsigns session JWTs,SALThashes API keys.- Prisma migrations run on every start. The cloud entrypoint composes
DATABASE_URLfrom the injectedDB_*vars, then hands off to Langfuse's own startup, which runsprisma migrate deploy. Thedb-initjob only creates the role and database. - The first user to sign up becomes the owner.
AUTH_DISABLE_SIGNUP = "false"is injected; there is no pre-seeded admin credential. - Session affinity is
ClientIPby default so a client's requests reach the same pod. - Minimum 1 replica is maintained (GKE has no scale-to-zero); a PodDisruptionBudget keeps the service available through node upgrades.
- No Redis. Langfuse v2 uses a PostgreSQL-backed queue and cache;
enable_redisstaysfalse.
2. Google Cloud Services & How to Explore Them
All commands assume you have run
gcloud container clusters get-credentials <cluster> --region <region> --project <project>
and that PROJECT, REGION, and NAMESPACE are set. The namespace and other identifiers
are reported in the deployment Outputs.
A. GKE Autopilot — the Langfuse workload
Langfuse pods are scheduled on Autopilot, which bills for the CPU/memory the pods actually request. Horizontal Pod Autoscaling sizes the deployment between the minimum and maximum replica counts.
- Console: Kubernetes Engine → Workloads → select the Langfuse workload to see pods, revisions, and events. Kubernetes Engine → Services & Ingress shows the external IP.

B. Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL 15
Langfuse stores all application data (traces, observations, scores, prompts, users, projects,
API keys) in a managed Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL 15 instance. Pods reach it privately through
the Cloud SQL Auth Proxy sidecar over a loopback listener; no public IP is exposed. On
first deploy an initialization Job creates the application role and database; Langfuse then
applies its schema via prisma migrate deploy on start.
- Console: SQL → select the instance for connections, backups, flags, and metrics.

C. Cloud Storage
A dedicated Cloud Storage bucket is provisioned automatically; the workload service account is granted access. Langfuse v2 keeps all trace and observability data in PostgreSQL; the bucket (and the optionally-mounted NFS share) are available for exports and media.

D. Secret Manager
Two cryptographic secrets are generated automatically and stored in Secret Manager:
NEXTAUTH_SECRET (signs session JWTs) and SALT (hashes API keys). Both are materialised into
the namespace via the Secret Store CSI driver and injected as env vars, and both are required
at boot. The database password is managed separately by the foundation.

E. Networking & ingress
By default the workload is exposed through an external Cloud Load Balancing IP. A custom domain with a Google-managed certificate can be enabled, and a static IP is reserved by default so the address survives redeploys.

F. Cloud Logging & Monitoring
Pod stdout/stderr flow to Cloud Logging; GKE and Cloud SQL metrics flow to Cloud Monitoring. Optional uptime checks and alert policies are available.

3. Langfuse Application Behaviour
- First-deploy database setup. An initialization Job runs
db-init.shusingpostgres:15-alpine. It connects through the Cloud SQL Auth Proxy and idempotently creates the application role and database and grants privileges. It does not create tables — the job is safe to re-run. - Prisma migrations on start. The cloud entrypoint composes
DATABASE_URLand delegates to Langfuse's own startup, which runsprisma migrate deploybefore launching the server. Upgrading the application version applies schema changes without a separate migration step. NEXTAUTH_SECRETandSALTare immutable after first boot. They are generated once and written to Secret Manager. ChangingNEXTAUTH_SECRETinvalidates all active sessions; changingSALTpermanently invalidates all existing API keys (SDK clients then get401). Only rotate during a planned maintenance window.- First user is the owner. On first visit, the Langfuse sign-up page creates the initial
account, which becomes the instance owner. After onboarding, set

/by default. The startup probe's wide failure threshold (30 × 15s) accommodates first-boot Prisma migrations. - NFS rollouts use
Recreate. When NFS is enabled and a shared server is discovered,App_GKEsets theRecreateupdate strategy so two pods never contend on the shared volume during an update.
4. Configuration Variables
Variables are grouped exactly as they appear on the deployment platform. Only settings specific to or notable for Langfuse are listed; every other input is inherited from App_GKE with its standard behaviour and defaults.

6. Configuration Pitfalls & Sensible Defaults
Risk: Critical (data loss / outage / security) — High (service degraded) — Medium (cost or partial degradation) — Low (minor).
Inherited plan-time validation. This module passes its configuration through the App_GKE foundation engine, which validates values and combinations at plan time — a read replica without its primary, IAP with no authorized identities, a
gen1runtime with NFS/GCS mounts, adatabase_typethat does not match an enabled extension, an out-of-rangeredis_port/backup_retention_days. Invalid configuration fails the plan with a clear, named error before any resource is created, so most mistakes below are caught up front rather than at apply or runtime.
